Pad A Girl | Feed a Child & Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Sensitization Outreach' Event

On December 23, 2023, The Voice for the Assault (VFTA) partnered with The I Am 3rd Initiative to conduct a significant outreach event at the Yimutu Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Apo, Abuja. This event, titled 'Pad a Girl, Feed a Child, and Gender-Based Violence Sensitization Outreach,' aimed to address critical issues affecting the residents of the camp, focusing on menstrual hygiene, child nutrition, gender-based violence (GBV) awareness, and the overarching importance of educational awareness for community development.

Objectives:

  1. Menstrual Hygiene Management:
    • Distribute sanitary pads to adolescent girls and women.
    • Educate participants on proper menstrual hygiene practices, highlighting the long-term benefits of maintaining hygiene for personal health and confidence.
  2. Child Nutrition:
    • Provide nutritious meals to children to combat malnutrition.
    • Raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet for child development and the role of nutrition in enhancing learning capacity and school performance.
  3. Gender-Based Violence Sensitization:
    • Conduct workshops and discussions on GBV.
    • Empower participants with knowledge on how to recognize, prevent, and report GBV, and underline the importance of education in fostering safe environments.
  4. Educational Awareness:
    • Emphasize the critical role education plays in breaking cycles of poverty and violence.
    • Promote the benefits of both formal and informal education as tools for empowerment and community resilience.

Activities and Execution:

  1. Distribution of Sanitary Pads:
    • Over 500 packs of sanitary pads were distributed to adolescent girls and women in the camp.
    • VFTA volunteers conducted interactive sessions on menstrual hygiene management, stressing not only the practical aspects of usage but also the benefits of understanding one’s body and health. The educational component included discussions on how menstrual health affects school attendance and participation.
  2. Feeding Program:
    • Nutritious meals were prepared and served to over 300 children in the camp.
    • The I Am 3rd Initiative team, in collaboration with VFTA volunteers, ensured that meals were well-balanced and included essential nutrients. Volunteers engaged with parents and guardians to educate them on the importance of nutrition in supporting children’s physical and cognitive development, which directly influences their ability to learn and thrive in educational settings.
  3. GBV Sensitization Workshops:
    • Interactive workshops were conducted to explore the various forms of gender-based violence.
    • Participants were educated on their rights, recognizing warning signs of GBV, and the importance of speaking out against violence. Emphasis was placed on how education can empower individuals to identify and respond effectively to GBV.
    • Resources and contact information for local support organizations were distributed to attendees to provide ongoing support and guidance.
  4. Educational Awareness Promotion:
    • Volunteers and facilitators highlighted the importance of educational access for all members of the camp, especially girls, as a tool for empowerment and long-term societal change.
    • Sessions discussed the benefits of education in fostering self-confidence, critical thinking, and opportunities for better livelihoods. Stories and testimonies of individuals who overcame challenges through educational pursuits were shared to inspire and motivate attendees.

The outreach event was warmly received by the residents of the Yimutu IDP Camp. Participants expressed deep gratitude for the support, education, and practical assistance provided.
