Report on the Pad a Girl, Feed a Child, Consent Education, Micro-Intervention, and Gender-Based Violence Sensitization Outreach' Event

On April 26, 2024, The Voice for the Assault (VFTA) collaborated with The I Am 3rd Initiative to carry out a multifaceted outreach event at the Durumi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Garki Area 1, Abuja. The event, titled 'Pad a Girl, Feed a Child, Consent Education, Micro-Intervention, and Gender-Based Violence Sensitization Outreach,' aimed to provide comprehensive support to the camp residents, focusing on menstrual hygiene, child nutrition, consent education, gender-based violence awareness, educational awareness, and immediate interventions for pressing issues.

Objectives:

  1. Menstrual Hygiene Management: – Distribute sanitary pads to adolescent girls and women. – Educate participants on proper menstrual hygiene practices.
  2. Child Nutrition: – Provide nutritious meals to children to combat malnutrition. – Raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet for child development.
  3. Consent Education: – Educate residents about the importance of consent in various aspects of life. – Promote respectful and healthy relationships.
  4. Educational Awareness: – Highlight the value of education in empowering individuals and communities. – Emphasize the long-term benefits of education for children’s development and future opportunities.
  5. Micro-Intervention: – Address immediate needs and concerns of the camp residents. – Provide essential supplies and support services.
  6. Gender-Based Violence Sensitization: – Conduct workshops and discussions on GBV. – Empower participants with knowledge on how to recognize, prevent, and report GBV.

Activities and Execution:

  1. Distribution of Sanitary Pads: – Over 700 packs of sanitary pads were distributed to adolescent girls and women in the camp. – VFTA volunteers provided education on menstrual hygiene management, emphasizing the importance of maintaining cleanliness and proper usage of sanitary pads.
  2. Feeding Program: – Nutritious meals were prepared and served to over 500 children in the camp. – The I Am 3rd Initiative team, along with volunteers from VFTA, ensured that the meals were balanced and included essential nutrients.
  3. Consent Education Workshops: – Interactive sessions were held to educate participants on the concept of consent. – Discussions included topics such as personal boundaries, respectful relationships, and the importance of seeking and giving consent in various situations.
  4. Educational Awareness Activities: – Sessions were conducted to underline the importance of education for children and adults alike. – Discussions highlighted how education can open doors to better opportunities, improve problem-solving skills, and promote socio-economic development.
  5. Micro-Interventions: – Immediate needs such as clothing, hygiene products, and medical supplies were distributed to residents. – A help desk was set up to address individual concerns and provide referrals to relevant support services.
  6. GBV Sensitization Workshops: – Workshops were conducted to discuss the various forms of gender-based violence. – Participants were educated on their rights and the importance of speaking out against violence. – Resources and contact information for local support organizations were provided to attendees.

Impact and Feedback:

The outreach event was well-received by the residents of the Durumi IDP Camp. Participants expressed gratitude for the comprehensive support and education provided. The distribution of sanitary pads and nutritious meals addressed immediate needs, while the consent education, educational awareness, and GBV sensitization workshops empowered the community with essential knowledge and resources.
