Renewable energy has significant implications for girls’ and women’ well-being and opportunities, particularly in developing regions Like Africa. The following are ways renewable energy beneficial to girls and women in Africa.
Health Benefits
In many households, girls and women are involved in daily chores such as cooking using traditional biomass fuels like firewood and charcoal. In the rural area, they have to walk long distance in search for a stack of firewood and during cooking, unknowingly to them, particulate matters(PM2.5) from the burning wood and charcoal get into their eyes and respiratory system which causes reduced visibility, running nose, and illness like bronchitis etc. The adoption of renewable energy sources such as biogas, solar cookers, and improved cook-stove can reduce indoor air pollution. This shift will reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses and eye problems causes by wood smoke that disproportionately affect girls and women.
Academic Performance
Access to reliable electricity from renewable sources is crucial for girls’ education. In many rural areas, lack of electricity limits study time after dark and access to technology. Solar-powered lights and access to renewable-powered devices enable girls to study longer and access educational resources, contributing to improved academic performance and broader career opportunities.
Empowerment
Renewable energy projects can empower girls by providing them with new skills and opportunities. For instance, involvement in community-led solar initiatives or sustainable agriculture projects powered by renewable energy sources can enhance their leadership skills and economic prospects.
Gender Equality
Promoting renewable energy initiatives that actively involve girls in decision-making processes and leadership roles foster gender equality. By breaking traditional gender stereotypes and promoting inclusive practices, these initiatives contribute to a more equitable society where girls have equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from sustainable development.
